A Mexican Fisherman, an American Businessman, and a Lesson on Happiness

An American businessman was visiting a small Mexican village when he saw a fisherman docking his tiny boat.

Inside were several big yellowfin tuna.

The American smiled and said, “These are great fish! How long did it take you to catch them?”

The fisherman replied, “Just a little while.”

The American was surprised. “Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?”

The fisherman shrugged. “I have enough to take care of my family’s needs.”

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The fisherman smiled.

“I sleep in, fish a little, play with my kids and take naps with my wife, Maria.

In the evening, I walk to the village. There, I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. My life is full and happy.”

The American laughed.

“I have a business degree from Harvard—I can help you! You should fish longer, sell more fish, and buy a bigger boat.

Then, use the money from that boat to buy more boats. Soon, you’ll have a whole fleet.

Instead of selling to a middleman, you could sell directly to a factory.

Eventually, you could start your own company and control everything—fishing, processing, and distribution.”

The fisherman listened as the American continued.

“Of course, you’d have to move to a big city like Mexico City, then Los Angeles, and finally New York, where you’d run your growing business.”

The fisherman asked, “And how long would this take?”

The American replied, “Oh, about 15 to 20 years.”

The fisherman nodded. “And then what?”

The American grinned.

“That’s the best part! When the time is right, you’ll sell your company and make millions!”

“Millions? Then what?” the fisherman asked.

The American smiled.

“Then you can retire! Move to a small village, sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take naps with your wife, and walk to the village in the evening to sip wine and play guitar with your friends.”

The fisherman just smiled. 😊

Happiness isn’t about having more; it’s about enjoying what you already have. 🎸🍷
