The PERMA Model, created by Dr. Martin Seligman, helps explain what makes people feel happy and fulfilled.
It goes beyond mental health, teaching us how to cultivate happiness, resilience, and a sense of purpose.
PERMA stands for five key parts of well-being:
1. Positive Emotion (P) 😊
Example:
Starting your day with a gratitude journal, where you write down three things you're thankful for.
This simple practice helps you focus on the positive, boosting feelings of joy, contentment, and optimism.
2. Engagement (E) 🎨
Example:
Getting completely absorbed in painting, playing a musical instrument, or coding a project.
Time seems to fly by because you’re in a state of “flow,” fully immersed and enjoying the process without distraction.
3. Relationships (R) 🤝
Example:
Spending quality time with close friends or family—whether it’s sharing a meal, having a heartfelt conversation, or even just laughing together.
These connections provide emotional support and a sense of belonging.
4. Meaning (M) 🌍
Example:
Volunteering at a local shelter or mentoring someone in need.
Contributing to something larger than yourself, like a cause you deeply care about, gives your life a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
5. Accomplishment (A) 🏆
Example:
Setting a goal to run a 5K race and completing it after weeks of training.
Achieving personal goals, no matter how big or small, boosts your confidence and gives you a sense of pride and satisfaction.
The PERMA model highlights that well-being is multi-dimensional.
It's not just about feeling happy but also about being engaged, maintaining strong relationships, finding purpose, and experiencing personal growth.
By actively nurturing these five elements, individuals can lead more balanced, fulfilling lives.
